Education
The Maqam Education department implements a dual-track approach to ensure the transmission and vitality of Maqam musical traditions. Through our bi-monthly classes, we create consistent touchpoints for learning, featuring instruction from master practitioners like Hamid Al-Saadi and Amir ElSaffar, who bring decades of experience in traditional Maqam performance. These sessions, offered both in-person and through live streaming, serve multiple constituencies—from diaspora youth seeking connection to their heritage, to professional musicians exploring new creative horizons, to scholars deepening their understanding of Middle Eastern musical traditions. We complement this regular programming with intensive annual training sessions in Iraq, starting with our inaugural Mosul workshop and expanding to additional cities, creating bridges between diaspora communities and traditional practitioners in the region. This strategy not only preserves and transmits traditional Maqam knowledge but also cultivates a new generation of practitioners who can carry this musical heritage forward while exploring its contemporary possibilities. Programs in Maqam Education department are geared toward young musicians of the Iraqi, Arab, Iranian and other Middle Eastern diasporas, professional musicians interested in learning skills to enhance their own creative practice, and scholars and ethnomusicologists researching Middle Eastern and other related musical traditions.
